There are few words one can use to describe this show but a few do come to mind such as, convoluted, over the top, ridiculous, lastly “what the hell did I just watch.” D-Frag is a text book example of a show having a massive budget but little premise to go off of. It looked amazing, and also had a massive arsenal of artist styles it dropped everywhere for comedic exposition. Unfortunately the closest thing you see to a plot is Takao’s Titanic Tata’s but lets get real the last thing this show needed was an engaging story line. for the most part that was what made this show so enjoyable, it didn’t take it’s self seriously and when the time comes for a rock/paper/scissors battle, damn right it’s going to be 9 minutes long!

The “premise” is that the protagonist Kazama wants to be a bad ass, and run a gang that’s feared throughout the school. Unfortunately his plans go aerie  when his gang is bond, gagged, tazed, and water boarded by a group of girls. He is then forced to join “The Game Creation Club (Provisional)” who’s main goal is to… you guessed it! Make games.

The main focus of the show is the in-suing games and competitions the club has with fellow students all at the expense of Kazuma’s dignity, and its hilarious. The last time I laughed this hard was “Baka no Test”. Although I must admit despite how awesome it is, it is definitely not for everyone. This show is so ADHD It will pick up story arks and drop them halfway through. At times the exposition is pretentious, and the comedy is hit and miss. It’s very reliant on tropes, and has an ecchi harem vibe at times. So if tsundere’s, yandere’s, or Rom/Com trope’s bother you, stear clear of this show! However If your going for laughs, or something on the lighter side you can’t miss it!

On a closing note the OST was fantastic! loads of back ground music, a flushed out soundscape and an OP/ED that was very well produced and fit the tone of the show perfectly. I was very impressed with the quality of audio in this show.

As of November 2015 the manga is still ongoing. This show has 12 EP’s + 1 OVA and was released in January 2014. Originally licensed by Mad Man Entertainment, the dubbed version can be found through Funimation.
