I’ve recently picked up “Paragon: The Essentials Edition” from my local GameStop and for some reason I can’t put my controller down. I’ve played my fair share of MOBAs, Multiplayer Online Battle Arenas, in the past some of which I have well over 400 hours in. There is just something about Paragon that makes me fall in love with them all over again.
With it being something different to rival the MOBA genre it is a nice change of pace from the PC titans that are DOTA 2 and League of Legends, even Smite is coming into the genre fast and hard. Paragon is similar to Smite in the sense that is a different take on MOBAs, with the 3rd person perspective instead of the over the top view that everyone has come to know. While the view is similar to Smite, that is the only detail it has in common. The feel that Paragon give is more dynamic; yet, it keeps the same rules as any MOBA out there.
The rules of the match are simple: Take down the enemy core. With three lanes each of which accompanied by two sets of towers, an inhibitor, and a jungle in between them on both teams side. The field has so much terrain that you can see the hills and the valleys as you run up them, then back down. The feel of the field as you move through is something to behold. Something that I feel smite is missing. The thing that Epic does right is the depth they put in to Agora.
The engine it runs on is Unreal Engine 3, the same engine used in Batman Arkham City, BioShock Infinite, as well as Borderlands 2. The engine speaks for itself with the smooth lighting, amazing character effects, and the movements of not only yourself and other players but also the minions in the match. Overall the graphics of the game are something to appreciate.
Epic is an amazing company that has an incredible amount of games under their belt. The same company that brought you the Gears of Wars series and Unreal Tournament series, this game is in good hands. The developers have individual weekly quest to get in battle and even community based events every week. They also release a new character every three weeks, while the roster of characters to play right now in under 20 they have assured the community that they have a huge list of character to add over time.
