Hey Everyone!
I’m going to start a series of articles/posts about an anime called ‘Saki’ and its other seasons, ‘Saki:Zenkoku-hen’ and ‘Saki: Achiga-hen – Episode of Side-A’. This article will be about the main protagonist Miyanaga Saki and if there are any mahjong jargon you don’t understand, you can find the definitions at the glossary on the last page
Saki is a 25 episode long anime that describes the journey of the protagonist – Miyanaga Saki through her first ever Mahjong tournament. She used to dislike Mahjong but after meeting many people, she realises her talent in Mahjong and leads her school team, Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club, to victory in the Prefecture Qualifiers for the National Tournament. The first season of Saki introduces the main characters of the top four mahjong teams in ‘Nagano’ which is the prefecture Saki lives in and the following seasons are about the Kiyosumi Mahjong Club in the national tournament until the semi finals as well as other teams. The anime belongs to the Shoujo, School, Game, Ecchi, Slice of Life and Shoujo-ai genres.
Miyanaga Saki is the MC of this anime – hence the name, and she is a first-year at Kiyosumi High School. At the start, she plays a game of mahjong against Haramura Nodoka, Kataoka Yukki and Suga Kyoutarou and then the club president – Takei Hisa finds out that Saki has incredible ability and luck in mahjong. Saki is able to manipulate her score to end up with plus minus zero which is much harder than winning itself. Recognising this ability, the National Middle School Mahjong Champion Nodoka, has her pride shattered because she lost to Saki in terms of ability, and asks Saki to play Mahjong with her again. We then find out that whenever Saki played mahjong with her family and won, her family would get mad at her and if she lost, she would get yelled at, so she figured out that if she didn’t win or lose, it would be peaceful.
Saki then joins the Kiyosumi Mahjong Club after realising how fun mahjong can be and becomes best friends with popular girl Nodoka. With the five girls from Kiyosumi, they are eligible to enter the team tournament and start their journey to become the representative team from the Nagano Prefecture!
