Welcome back to the Saki Series!

After finishing introducing the members of the Kiyosumi Mahjong Club members, the next few articles will about the Ryuumonbuchi High School Mahjong Club. This article will be about their ace, Amae Koromo who is the all-time, record-breaker player at the national tournament. If there are any mahjong jargon you don’t understand, you can find the definitions at the glossary on the last page 🙂

Saki is a 25 episode long anime that describes the journey of the protagonist – Miyanaga Saki through her first ever Mahjong tournament. She disliked Mahjong but after meeting many people, she realises her talent in Mahjong and leads her school team, Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club, to victory in the Prefecture Qualifiers to attend the National Tournament. The first season of Saki introduces the main characters of the top four mahjong teams in ‘Nagano’ which is the prefecture Saki lives in and the following seasons describe Kiyosumi Mahjong Club in the national tournament until the semi finals as well as other teams. The Ryuumonbuchi Mahjong Club was the previous prefecture representative for Nagano and was one of the four school in the finals with Kiyosumi. The anime belongs to the Shoujo, School, Game, Ecchi, Slice of Life and Shoujo-ai genres.

Amae is a national-class monster and she is a legend in the mahjong world. Ryuumonbuchi was only able to beat the six-time representative of the Nagano region, Kazekoshi because of Amae’s terrifying mahjong skills that completely turned the tables against them. Amae lost her parents in a car crash at a young age and her cousin’s family, Ryuumonbuchi, took her in. Amae treats her cousin, Ryuumonbuchi Touka as her big sister and is often cared for by Touka. We first hear about her in the starting episodes when Yukki researches the past records of the winning team. Pro player Fujita is inspired by Amae who bet her in a pro-am tournament and tells Saki and Nodoka that they won’t ever beat Amae.

Although Amae looks cute and innocent, when she plays serious mahjong, she turns into a frightening player. Her presence isn’t bound by common sense and has special talent in mahjong however, she is still beaten by Saki who was the first person to ever beat her.
