First Impressions of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth

Introduction

I find myself once again writing about Digimon, and once again I am praising it for something the franchise deserves respect for click ‘here‘ for my previous Digimon article. Digimon games have been a strange phenomenon within the gaming industry. The first Digimon game I played was ‘Digimon World:DS’ I was so amazed by how little I heard about the game I decided to go back in time and check out the cult classic ‘Digimon World’ for the PlayStation 1. That game is extremely hard-core and is probably the closest thing to being a Digimon tamer. To celebrate Digimon’s 15th anniversary Bandai released ‘Digimon Story:Cyber Sleuth’ and I couldn’t wait to get stuck in.Digimonworld

Story

As the title states, these are my first impressions after 10 hours of game time. The beginning of the game starts off quite strange, you are in a chat room with a bunch of mini avatars discussing the issues about hackers. The conversation goes on for quite a while until a program enters your chat and tells you to meet him in ‘Eden’. I was so thrown off by this almost out of place start I was questioning whether I bought the correct game. Anyway you are then introduced to the world of ‘Eden’ an online world in which people can go about their lives as lifelike avatars; this reminded me very much of peoples obsession with the online and infamous world of ‘Second life’. As strange and as uneasy the idea of living half your life in a digital world makes me feel, it doesn’t seem that implausible. Recreational activities such as concerts, fairgrouds and sporting events can all be held in the digital world without polluting and taking up space in the real world, it would most definitely solve major economical issues.

The game throws a lot of information and names at you, making it really easy to get confused causing a loss of interest. With all this being said, Digimon Story creates an extremely eerie/creepy atmosphere that compliments the under-levels of Eden nicely. The hectic beginning and cluelessness of characters is very similar to Digimon season 1. After meeting with your friends in a sub-level of Eden called ‘Kowloon’ you start to come across Digimon, creatures used by hackers to disrupt technology and cause trouble, I honestly appreciate the idea of hackers being thugs of a digital world like Eden; it once again feels strangely realistic.

After being attacked by an “Eater” , the player narrowly escapes back into the real world as a cyber avatar whilst your physical body is now comatose.

*A quick side note there is absolutely no character customization whatsoever besides the gender and name*.

After meeting a detective by the name of Kyoko you join her detective agency, becoming a… CYBER SLEUTH! You are basically able to jump between the digital world and real world with ease, solving crimes and trying to figure out how to save your body. As the game progresses you become more aware of “ghosts” seemingly in distress, these ghosts seem to be slipping between the digital and real world- these apparitions are the first signs of the two worlds interfering with one another.
